Commons:Wiki Loves Africa 2017/Nigeria
Wiki Loves Africa is an annual contest where anyone across Africa can contribute media that relates to that year's theme to Wikimedia Commons for use on Wikipedia and other project websites of the Wikimedia Foundation. Wiki Loves Africa encourages participants to contribute media (photographs, video and audio) that illustrate the specific theme for that year. Each year the theme changes and is chosen by the community from universal, visually-rich and culturally-specific topics (for example, markets, rites of passage, festivals, public art, cuisine, natural history, urbanity, daily life, notable persons, etc).
This edition of the contest focuses on "People at Work". This edition has produced outstanding results; the Ilorin Wikimedia Hub organized the Wiki Loves Africa 2017 photowalks, workshops and upload sessions in Ilorin. These events mark the first time ever that any Wikimedia event is holding in Ilorin, the state capital of Kwara and one of the largest cities in Nigeria. The response to the Wiki Loves Africa in Nigeria has been recording breaking. Nigeria broke previous records, with over 3,000 images submitted for the contest; this figure quadruples our previous achievement and also places Nigeria way ahead of other participating countries. The quality of submitted images have also improved.
