The World Health Organisation (WHO) has just released a report on Nutrition in Africa that shows cause for serious concern.
The report, using data from national surveys of 47 African countries, reveals that stunting in children has increased in recent years. Stunting (impaired growth and development) could be caused by poor nutrition, disease or a lack of psychological or social stimulation. Children with stunting will experience many obstacles in everyday life and often perform poorly at school, but malnutrition can also have serious knock-on effects for whole populations.
Communities with high levels of stunting tend to suffer with low adult wages and low productivity. Economists estimate that stunting alone leads to a loss of up to 16% of GDP worldwide!
One way to tackle stunting is to provide community facilities where young children can receive psycho-social stimulation and adequate food. For a more long-term solution, education can help to give young people the tools they need for a chance to escape from poverty and its effects like malnutrition.
With this in mind, Agape chooses to support projects that both care for and educate children and young people, like the Cradle of Love babies' home in Tanzania and the JayNii Foundation in Ghana, through your donations and by sending volunteers.
