WIKI LOVES AFRICA HELP DESK

The Wiki Loves Africa photographic competition takes place in over 50 countries. All over Africa people cooperate to take photographs (and videos and sound files) related to the theme for each year and upload these to Wikimedia Commons. Sometimes new uploaders come across difficulties. If you have any please let us help you. Ask your questions. Please provide us with useful information, such maybe the pictures you have already uploaded. This is a multilingual page, you can write here in English or, if you prefer, in other languages of participating countries. → Ask a new question

Hello, you can participate to WikiLovesAfrica with pictures from all the African countries. In some countries, there are local wikimedians who organize local events and will award the best local pictures. Badly, in other countries, like Equatorial Guinea, we do not have enough local participants, so there is no local events. However you can participate to the international event. Visible Logo/Brand Name

Hi there, I have a few photos I wanted to submit, but the model is wearing a pair of skates with a visible logo. Will that disqualify me? Thanks.

It depends how visible the logos are. I invite you to read Commons:De minimis. In summary

De minimis is a Latin expression meaning about minimal things, normally in the locution de minimis non curat lex ("The law does not concern itself with trifles"). De minimis use of a copyrighted work is such a trivial use that the consent of the copyright owner is not required.

In some cases Commons files with copyrighted content considered acceptable as de minimis may be identified with the template {{De minimis}}. In short, if the logo is a small part of the image rather than its main focus, the image is acceptable on Wikimedia Commons.

For more clarity, you can also upload the image and add {{De minimis}} this will add the following info on the page

How much do you win?

There are several prizes up for grabs, both nationally and internationally. For national prizes, please see what events are being held locally in your country. At the international level, there are 3 main prizes for Wiki Loves Africa, and as with last year, there will be two additional prize categories for photos and media.
The international prizes are:

• 1st prize: US$1000
• 2nd prize: US$800
• 3rd prize: US$500

Additional categories are:

• Culturally specific or traditional representations of health or wellness : US$500
• Prize for best quality video (audio and visual quality and storytelling will be taken into account): US$500

A Disgusting Big Lie

The lead-on photo in the "Health and Wellness in Africa" is a scum beyond contempt. The photo shows the fort of Sultan Qaitbey in Alexandria, Egypt, which is hardly "Africa". This aside, the photoshopped image has nothing to do with the reality of the place. There is no reflecting pool in front of the fort, only a very crowded car-park. More importantly, the Big Lie is the photoshopped-in image of a disabled man in a wheelchair reflected in the nonexistent pool. The place is NOT wheelchair-accessible. Disabled people get there more attention and assistance than they would in the US, but in a different way. Posting such an obviously fraudulent image as an invitation to a photo contest is an invitation to submit fraudulent images and makes the professed righteous purpose invalid. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 197.58.239.160 (talk • contribs) 23:13, 7 April 2021 (UTC)

Thank you for raising your concerns on what must have been a fairly confusing image if you are indeed very familiar with the Citadel. Our team has spent a while going through your accusations and looking in detail at the image, all information available about the Citadel, at maps, at Google Earth and at recent photos of the site in question. I have looked at the angle the photograph was taken in and zoomed in to look at all the elements that make up the picture you refer to and at another in the series that won a prize for Wiki Loves Monuments 2020.

You are right, it is not a reflecting pool. The image is taken at extreme street level (i.e. from the tarmac) and uses a puddle of water to capture the reflection. You can clearly see the kerb that separates the road from the pavement that leads to the entrance gate for the Citadel. It is an unusual perspective (which is what makes it a fantastic photograph), but there was no lie or photoshop involved and it is certainly not fraudulent.

The wheelchair is being rolled outside the Citadel complex on the municipal pavement that bypasses the Citadel. The image just captures a moment. It is not a comment about the accessibility (or not) of the fortress or the very real struggles for those who are disabled in a contemporary world. It is an image showing a child in a wheelchair with the Citadel's front gate in the backdrop. Your interpretations and assumptions are your own.

With regards to whether Egypt is considered Africa or not ... Geographically, politically, historically, economically, and in almost every other way of looking at it, Egypt is very firmly based on the continent of Africa and, specifically, is a key North African country. There is absolutely no question that Egypt is part of Africa, and its history, culture, traditions and contemporary culture are as important and vital to capture as any of the countries, territories and cultures that are part of this very diverse, contrary continent. Speaking on behalf of the organisation (Wiki In Africa) that facilitates this annual competition, and as an organiser, a Wikipedian and an African, I do not think one person or perspective can or should decide what or who is considered African or indeed what is categorised as Africa.

We hope this clears up any confusion or misunderstanding.
