DescriptionHubert the tailor (7831365042).jpg |
When Hubert, 26, fled his home in Kimbumba with his family, he was petrified of what might happen to them. Shots were being fired and they had to leave immediately. During the frantic moments in which he left, grabbing a few things to take with them, he had one thing on his mind – how would he feed his family when they arrived in Kibati camp? It was a tough decision to make - for the past year he had made a living through his big Singer sewing machine, but such a heavy item could be a burden on his perilous journey by foot to the camp. He quickly tied it up to a Chukadu - an innovative wooden bike that people in eastern Congo use to transport goods - and headed out into the unknown. “I knew I had to take it with me, how else would I put food on the table? I was here (in Kibati camp) back in 2009 without any means to survive and I did not want to put my family in this situation again,” says Hubert as he sews a tattered garment by the side of the road. “Business is not good here because people have nothing. I charge very little, 100 Congolese francs (approx 8 pence) for my services - but it is at least enough to make sure my wife, my two children and my mum all eat once a day.” Photo: Marie Cacace/Oxfam |
