Cropping?

What's the general preference on cropping photographs? I have a photograph with lots of extra background that probably isn't needed. Assuming the extra bits of the photo do not detract from the photo, what should I do?

• upload the original photo
• crop the photo and upload it
• upload the original, crop the excess, and replace the original (so the original is in the history)

If I do crop the photo, what should I do about the EXIF data?

• keep the original metadata, including the original thumbnail
• keep the original metadata, but update the thumbnail
• remove the metadata and the thumbnail all together

File revisions are kept by MediaWiki. It's like a file history. It's best to always upload the original first (unless it is a truly hideous size), then upload the crop over the top it, explaining what you're doing in the file summary. (Your account has to be > 4 days old to do this.) I don't know about EXIF data. That's what I went ahead and did (see CocaCola Blāk.jpeg). That way, if somebody wants the original image (in case, for example, they think they can do a better job cropping it), then it's there. But, as far as I know, you cannot reference an old version of an image anywhere, so if somebody needed to embed the full-one (for whatever reason), they'd have to upload a forked copy. No big deal, I suppose, as this is all hypothetical and not likely to happen. The program I used to edit the original does not change the EXIF data when saving. The modified timestamp, image size, and even the thumbnail still reflect all of the information of the original image. It's too much work to change the EXIF data, and some of it is still useful. —TheMuuj ^Talk 00:59, 2 September 2006 (UTC)

Image tag replacement

Could someone operating a bot replace the tag {{Copyrighted free use provided that}} with {{Attribution Entomart}} for all the images in Category:Entomart?. There are 476 images. The author of the images has changed the Commons incompatible notification on use requirement to a request. --Para 06:49, 3 September 2006 (UTC)

Image:BassReeves.jpg - public domain licensing

Hi, I was advised on wikipedia that the above image would be in the public domain because the subject died in 1910 so it can be assumed the photo was published before 1923 in the US. However I see that here you're a bit stricter about when and where the image was published. So two questions:

• Is it OK to have the image without knowing exactly when and where it was first published?
• And if so, which of the public domain "licenses" do I choose? None of them seem to be for a pre-1923 image.

If it was first published in the US, then the PD-US tag is OK. Just write on there "Subject died in 1910" or something similar, so other readers can figure out why you think this is right.

If it was first published elsewhere, then we are concerned mostly with the date of the death of the photographer, not the subject. If the author died before 1936, then {{PD-old}} is appropriate. pfctdayelise (translate?) 06:41, 4 September 2006 (UTC)

Commons is a different project, so you're automatically marked as a new user. Option 1: you wait 4 days; option 2: upload it under a different name, provide a link and a request to move it here and someone else will replace it for you. Cheers, NielsF 22:10, 3 September 2006 (UTC)

Smaller file size

A photo of a flower compressed with successively more lossy compression ratios from left to right.

I'm afraid I'm asking for technical help here. I'm now learning how to clean up my images using Seashore. However, when I save them through Seashore, the file size shrinks from around 740 kB to around 440 kB. The one I have re-uploaded (Image:Victoria Falls, chasm.jpg) does not seem to have lost resolution (I re-downloaded, zoomed and compared it to the original scan). So is something being lost or is Seashore just saving the files more compactly? Cheers if anyone can advise on this... JackyR 22:40, 4 September 2006 (UTC)

There is likely some setting somewhere about level of JPG compression. What level do you have it at? (I don't know what a good level is, but likely someone else does...) --pfctdayelise (translate?) 02:57, 5 September 2006 (UTC)

JPG uses is a lossy data compression method - smaller file size is achieved by reducing the images quality (see the example on the right). For commons, it's advisable to use high quality images, preferably unaltered after creation, to allow reuse without loss. Only if the unaltered image is too large for mediawiki to handle right (there are time and memory limits for thumbnailing), upload a scaled down (but still high quality) version over the original file.

Note that in some cases, there are ways to reduce the file size without loss - JPEG can for example contain pre-computed thumbnail images, which can be removed without altering the image itself. It's important though to use a tool that leaves the original image data untouched (no re-encoding) - jhead for example. But I can't really think of a good reason to do that. The original file is hardly ever served to the webbrowsers anyway, since mostly automatically generated thumbnails are used, even on the image description page. -- Duesentrieb^(?!) 10:21, 5 September 2006 (UTC)

Appropriate licensing tag?

Someone on the english wiki said that this image Image:Noguchi Franklin.png should have this license: w:Template:Statue, and that my photo was not free. Thoughts? Comments? --Evrik 20:27, 5 September 2006 (UTC)

I'm afraid that is correct. A Photograph showing artwork (such as a sculpure) can not be published or license without the original artist having a say, since it is derivative work of the sculpure. Some contries have an exception for things permanently installed in public - in the US however that exception does not extend to sculpures and other works of fine art (it only applies to buildings, afaik). -- Duesentrieb^(?!) 20:44, 5 September 2006 (UTC)

Uploading and resizing image

I uploaded Image:Tectonic Map of Grawler Craton.gif but do not know how to resize it from the full-page Download high resolution version (1084x1415, 62 KB) to a thumb to use on the article. The website states, "Please feel free to copy and use this brief review of the Gawler Craton and the following map generated by Geosurveys Australia Pty Ltd.," so I believe that I do not have to worry about copyright violation. You could use [[Image:Tectonic Map of Grawler Craton.gif|thumb|Description]].

Terms of use is not clear. They are not mention modification and redistribution. So this could violate Commons:Licensing.

Picture obtained from a movie screen capture

Dear Wiki people,

I have a photograph of an actor that I would like to include in a Wiki article about him. This photo was obtained from a movie screenshot/capture. Can I upload it and feature it in the Wiki article? You can't upload this image on Commons (see Commons:Licensing) if movie is copyrighted. You could upload this to Wikipedias, which allow copyrighted images (English Wikipedia have special tag en:Template:film-screenshot for that purpose). --EugeneZelenko 15:02, 7 September 2006 (UTC)

Don't be surprised if it gets overwritten while you're waiting. "Plant.jpg" is a terrible name! At least you could have called it "Plant found on DD/MM/YY" or "Plant found in X location". pfctdayelise (translate?) 02:23, 9 September 2006 (UTC)

Wikisource book images

I'm planning to add an out-of-copyright mathematics textbook (original U.S. copyright 1911) to Wikisource. The book is replete with many small images, and it was suggested on Wikisource that these be placed on the Commons. So my thought is to create a sub-category somewhere under the mathematics category tree specifically for images out of the book. (Perhaps under a "calculus" sub-category?) To name the images I was going to use a common prefix, followed by a section number/image number. Does this approach make sense, or is there a better method you could suggest? I don't want the images to get replaced, deleted or renamed as it would mar the book. So I'd like to get this worked out in advance, if possible. Thank you! — RJHall 14:35, 8 September 2006 (UTC)

I could recommend to include small description to image name which reflect contents (especially if you'll create full description). It'll be easier to add these images to topic (derivatives, integrals, complex analysis and so on) categories. --EugeneZelenko 15:07, 8 September 2006 (UTC)

Okay I can make the name more descriptive, but I'll still need to include a unique prefix and possibly an identifier in order to avoid overwrites. That might make it a little long. — RJHall 19:12, 8 September 2006 (UTC)

If you want to see some precedents, look at Category:De Wikisource book. It´s customary at German Wikisource to upload scans of whole books here. I myself made Category:Finck Die araner mundart. Angr 19:54, 8 September 2006 (UTC)

how to comfortably list all files in a directory?

Probably the easiest way is to use CatScan (example - all pages [incl. images, subcats, everything] in category:Australia - depth 1). And then just filter out everything that doesn't start with Image:. Better than wiki pages, it lists all contents - not just the first 200. pfctdayelise (translate?) 09:02, 11 September 2006 (UTC)

Working on a page

I am wondering, I wanted to start a complete and extensive flowchart representing the legal system and every path, option and possibility in which the system can lead depending on the situation. With this site is their accesability to a flow chart or would that be my responsability to get and then post. If that was the situation how would others ad to it without that program. Community editing of images is much more difficult that community editing of text (we don't have a graphics wiki; really no-one does). What you can do is to use the SVG structured file format (rather than a PNG or JPG or the file format of some proprietary flowcharting program). There are lots of free editors for SVG, so if you upload SVG then someone else can change it (or make an international version of it, fix typos, improve graphics, etc.). Personally I strongly recommend Inkscape for this job. -- Finlay McWalter 19:15, 17 September 2006 (UTC)

Billboard

Are billboards as publicly displayed images in the public domain? The reason why i am asking is because of the illustrations for a contemporary artist (now dead) whose article could be valluably illustrated by the beautiful billboards (affiche in french) which he produced. But I do not want to upload any before knowing the answer. PS: in case the info is pertinent, I am talking about a czechoslovak born artist who lived and created in France, Jiří Kolár. Removing a file

You still have copyright over any image you've created. Releasing it under a free license doesn't change that. You can't "undo" the act of releasing them under free licenses, however. They can only be deleted by an administrator (I am one). There is a process to nominate images for deletion - COM:DEL - but you will need to explain why you want them deleted. Some people may not accept the reason simply that "you want them to be deleted". Can you explain a bit more why they need to be removed? Yes, thank you for responding. We wanted to start a project for the Iranian diaspora. We didn't know how to begin so someone suggested Wikipedia. Now, we are writing and preparing a book and it requires, among others, for the pictures to be copyrighted. So now I have a little dilema, I have already posted these pictures. So, once we have made sure the pictures are copyrighted correctly, we might even post them back in the future. But for now, I would greatly appreciate if you could delete them so we can go forward with this process. I apologize for any incovenience. Please be more specific with your language. If you are the photographer that actually took the pictures you uploaded, you still retain your copyright. The fact that you uploaded your images here under a free license does not change the fact that you are the copyright holder. However, the specific licenses you uploaded them here under, {{CopyrightedFreeUse}}/{{PD-self}}, means that you have granted anyone the permission to use your images "for any purpose including unrestricted redistribution, commercial use, and modification." I do not believe this is reversible. Once you've said that anyone can use your images for any purpose, you cannot simply retract the statement to prevent people from using them.

You can still register your work with the U.S. copyright office; they will accept registration for both published and unpublished works. This isn't really necessary since published works are automatically copyrighted, but it may be useful if you need to prove that you own the copyright to your image.

Does your publisher have some restriction on the images you are using in the book? If the publisher is only concerned about being able to use your images, there should be no problem—anyone can use your images for anything with no problem. But if your publisher requires an exclusive license to publish your images, then something needs to be done. Perhaps you can discuss the issue furthur with your publisher. There aren't any set policies (as of yet) for handling cases like these, so it may be possible to make an exception for you.

If worse comes to worse, you can simply retake the photos. None of them are of one-time events, so you should be able to obtain equivalent images that you can retain exclusive rights to. ~MDD4696 14:38, 18 September 2006 (UTC)

Honestly: I stopped reading the discussion on Italian licensing after having read about one third of it. There still is no {{PD-Coa-Italy}} or anything like it. Therefore: I took the coat of arms of the city of Riesi (CL) from the Italian Wikipedia. I put it in the Commons and inserted it in the German article. I put {{PD-Coa}}. Is that okay? Mobile phone images

Are there any specific rules for mobile phone images? If I were to upload one, would it have to look as though it's switched off? I only ask because most of the images of phones I have seen show the mobile phone switched off or with nothing on the screen, and I was wondering if this was because of some licensing issues or possibly a fair use thing. Question about swiss banknotes

Hi. I recently uploaded an image of a 10-franc swiss banknote on Wikipedia (for the Leonhard Euler article). All swiss banknotes in commons have a tag explaining that they are, by swiss law, free of copyright. I actually have three questions:

1. Should I bother uploading it also to Commons?
2. Is the copyright template for swiss banknotes also available on Wikipedia? (I could not find it and left some explanation referencing Commons)
3. More tricky: I took the image from the Swiss central bank page, again this is where the other Commons images come from. However, this web page has high resolution images which are much nicer. Since the banknotes are not copyrighted, is it fair game to copy these images to Wikipedia or Commons?

Coat of arms and badge of military unit

Hi, I am working on an article about a military unit in the German army. In wikimedia commons I have not come across any availbale images of the coat of arms and the badge of this particular unit. Whilst surfing the net I did find some examples which I could upload and then use in my article. My question is as to whether I need a permission to use these images or not, particlularly since these symbols have been use for about 50 years and are more or less equvalent to coat of arms etc. of states

svg rendering

How do I find what I want?

One of the suggestions in Search tips was to find a picture in a Wikipedia article in the same category and get ideas from that. But I have found pictures and that does not give a clue as to where it is located here. How can I tell from clicking on a picture in a Wikipedia article what category that picture is in? Login bad password

I can't login. I use the same password for all the wikimedia projects. I tried the email password option but got nothing. If I try to create the account I get "Login error: Username entered already in use. Please choose a different name."

Trouble uploading pictures

I have uploaded Image:Form_of_government_09212006.png to reflect the change to Thailand's status after the coup. Can someone copy this image over to overwrite the old Image:Form_of_government.png? Note that Thailand is coloured with both red and olive because the military junta is in power while the constitutional monarchy is being kept intact (although without a constitution).-- Aviageek 21:06 Sep 21 2006 (UTC)

I need this file (Image:Subway Denotation (Rush Hours In the Peak Direction.gif) to be moved to this new title (Image:Subway Denotation (Rush Hours In the Peak Direction).gif). Notice that in the current one, there is no bracket after direction, which needs to be done. I can't do it because I am too new and the upload warning told me to go here. rights to use Wikimedia reproductions in a book !!?

Hi,

I am sorry if that seems obvious... having read all doc I could find here about it, it seems self evident that I could use wikimedia's reproductions where I want and for what I want.

I'm busy publishing a series of adventures for kids, and, since the story is taking place at the Renaissance, close to Leonardo, it seemed logical to use some of Leonardo's paintings and drawings to illustrate it. And so, having found some of those drawings and paintings at Wikimedia under Commons, I decided, by pure civility and politness, to email for instance Windsor Library, since I wish to include there address as the place where the readers could go to see the originals and lot of other similar paintings too.

Seems that

1. Windsor Library has never heard of Creative Commons, nor Wikimedia (I gave them the urls!). and,

My last answer to them, was that I need a bit of time to fully understand all that, not wanting anyway to be against copyright laws, but also not to be mislaid only because they may ignore later developements on those laws.

So, I would be very thankful if you could advise me, or, at least explain a bit what is the matter there, since my publishing of those books (5 volumes) has already been retarded because of that, since last April, and that because of it, a signature day proposed by the Museum Leonardo da Vinci at Clos-Lucé (Amboise), will have to wait now, till the next touristic season!

I may add that, I've got similar problems with Ambrosiana Library in Italy, they also are pretending that I need to pay some fees to them, since they are the owners of the works.

I want to use commons images for my mediawiki

I installed mediawiki. wow! Excellent!!

I love wikipedia, and...:)...yesterday, I format all windows XP, and installed Fedora Core 5 and mediawiki...:))))

But, I can use Commons images to my mediawiki...:(

If I set my ‘’LocalSettings.php‘’ file properly, I use Commons images!! WoW!!! I use 800,000 Commons files!! :))))

But...All setting process is not so difficult. Fedora Core 5 install is so easier than 5 years ago.

Right to use C.Commons reproductions from Wikimedia in books !!?

Hi, thanks for unswering, I'm not quite shure if I had to continue and edit the previous post or start a new one, so, if it is wrong, please, tell me. Sorry, I didn't realised That I started Wikipedia with a username then it is: "Dsoslglece"... it was quite a few months ago, around March April, when I did contribute to some articles in music, about Eugène Ysaÿe. For the paintings and drawings in question, They all come from wikimedia under Leonardo da Vinci, where there is a whole collection of his works and details of it. The ones I'd like to use are :

• 1 Auto portrait (one of them, which are probably not auto portrait, but his oncle

  portraits)

" 2 Annunciation(detail)

• 3 project for a big arbalete
• 4 Design for a flying machine
• 5 Grotesque head
• 6 Grotesque heads

I may wish to use some more in the future, but, actually, the principal arguing about, comes from Windsor Library about the drawings from their collection (5 & 6), and with Ambrosiana, about 3 & 4. But the important thing is only to know what is allowed to do with any of those reproductions from Wikimédia under C. Commons copyrights. Then, whenever I need to use ONE OF THEM, I know what I can do with it without breaking any law. I did follow the link you indicated to me, I may be dumb, but couldn't make out, anything I could use it for apart of documentation... so excuse me.

Being drawings and paintings, the files probably contain the {{PD-Art}} tag, which in turn refers to the Bridgeman v. Corel case of exact photographic copies of public domain images not being copyrightable according to US and UK law. As User:Eloquence said[1] related to the York Project (which also contains some photos of paintings currently in the Windsor Library), "I'm sure eventually someone will claim that they own the copyright to a public domain work of art here on Commons, but Jimbo has always said that he is prepared to go to court to defend the right to distribute art in the public domain. The attempt to re-copyright it through reproduction copyrights is pure piracy, and we should stand united against it." Two questions

When I upload a file, how do I use one of the existing templates for things in the public domain? This came up recently when I tried to upload this image of a stamp. The template is not part of the dropdown menu, so what exactly should I do? Another question on that file. I am assuming that since this stamp is in the public domain then any image I can find of it is also in the public domain and can be uploaded here. Is that a correct assumption? Thanks for your help. If the licence tag you need is not in the dropdown menu, you can write it manually in the description field. A list of tags can be found here: Commons:License tags.

Can someone help me delete items of a category?

Hi, I'm Naftaly-Direct, a Wiki user on the English and the Hebrew versions of Wikipedia.

My Freind, Avi Kedmi (That's the English way to pronounce his nick, because I'm not sure you can read the Hebrew letters of "אבי קדמי") upload some great pics of Maccabi Tel Aviv basketball team, but he wishes to delete 7 pics of Pini Gershon (former coach of Maccabi) in order to upload them with new names.

Avi asked me to deliver this massage for him, because he is a Hebrew user, and He liked me to write it for him in English.

ND There are several ways to handle this. If you feel these qualify for speedy deletion, and since they were uploaded only two days ago, I don't see the issue, you can tag them as "speedy" like my example here. I reversed that edit, but you can use whatever justification you feel necessary to delete. Let me know when you've labeled.

If some time has passed, the admins are generally reluctant to accept speedy deletion on images that have been released. Renaming a picture

Is there a way to rename / move a picture (As in Wikipedia)? Seems as Avi Kedmi actually wanted to rename Image:Pini-5005.JPG as Image:Pini101.JPG and such, and intend to upload the rest of the pictures in 'proper name'...

Mess with the Koch Snowflake

Hi, this is the first time I uploaded something to the commons, so forgive me. I noticed that there was no SVG version of Image:Flocke.PNG, so I wrote a small script to generate versions for all iterations from 0 to 7 and uploaded the results.

Anyways, the images showed up fine in my browser, but as I uploaded them I noticed they were distorted in the rendering by mediawiki, and I needed a few tries to fix it. I also made a typo for the first two images. Here's what would be needed to clean up the mess:

• Delete Image:Koch Snoflake 0th iteration.svg
• Delete Image:Koch Snoflake 1st iteration.svg
• Move Image:Koch Snowflake 2nd iteration (2).svg over Image:Koch Snowflake 2nd iteration.svg

Image:Phenol red.png

I took notice of this file from the English Wikipedia when an editor pointed out that the structure was incorrect. I checked a few sources online and I drew the correct structure. I've uploaded it since as Phenol red 2.png. Can someone move it to Phenol red.png? Images at other Wikipedia language articles

I think this is a technical problem. But here it is. Currently at en.wikipedia, we are taking inventory of all the Anishinaabe-related articles. Part of that, we are also taking a look at what non-English Wikipedia articles there are with Anishinaabe-related articles. Some have really cool graphics but 1) I don't know how to get the graphics to move from the non-English to the English site, and 2) many would make more sense to migrate to here rather than to en.wikipedia. Is there a way to consolidate the images to here from across all Wikipedia sister projects and their language sites? CJLippert 22:42, 4 October 2006 (UTC)

Hi. Definitely, uploading to Commons instead of locally (English Wikipedia) is a good idea, as long as the images have a clear source (who is the author? where was it originally published?) and license (how do you know it's PD or some other free license applies?).

The first thing to do is check whether the images are actually already hosted at Commons. For example at , which is used in the eswp article, you can see a small template with the Commons logo. This generally means "this image is hosted at Wikimedia Commons, click here to see the original image description page". So you can follow that link to find the image at Commons: Image:Anishinaabe-Anishinini Map.PNG. Then you can automatically use it at English Wikipedia as well.

If you find that an image is hosted locally, after verifying the source and license, you can use Commons Helper to help you transfer the image to Commons (it makes sure all the necessary info is copied across). But don't move images if you can't understand the language the information is in.

Funny you bring the Image:Anishinaabe-Anishinini Map.PNG example. On the localised en.wikipedia, as that image's creator, I have said that image is free of all copyright. However, the commons.wikipedia has it as being copyrighted but without usage restrictions. Was there a mistranslation going from en.wikipedia to es.wikipedia to commons.wikipedia? This makes me wonder how reliable the copyright notices are at other local sites. The images I would like to move all say they're copyright free, but I have not been able to identify the original sources of those images. Suggestions? CJLippert 16:45, 5 October 2006 (UTC)

For the other images, if you provide links, we can have a look at them. But if there is flat out no source mentioned at all, then they're probably just grabbed randomly off the net, right... definitely don't upload here. Try contacting the uploader on their user talk page. If you find they're a fly-by upoader, then very likely the images won't be usable. Uploading images without spending rest of life reading about copyright

Oh, good grief, I just want to upload some images for some plant articles. I don't care if people vomit on them and pray to them afterwards, but the pictures would be useful in their appropriate articles and don't appear to already exist on Wikimedia Commons or Wikipedia or in the PD. I tried doing this before but my head exploded before I could figure out what license to use, and I've spent the past month in recovery. Now I realize pursuing this matter any further will result in a second explosion or my never ever ever in this lifetime or the next 37 billion trillion zillion lifetimes actually uploading a picture whilst in the maze of questions, answers, comments, confusions and discussions about which licenses to use. Can anyone tell me in one sentence or less what is the difference between PD and GNU and if one is preferable, in YOUR POV over the other and why. If someone else is the creator, then we have to worry about their wishes.

But if you took the pictures yourself, and don't care about being credited for them or anything like that in the future, use {{Pd-self}}.

If you would like to require that you be attributed for any use of the image, use {{CC-BY-2.5}}.

If you would like to require that you be attributed for any use of the image AND that any derivative work (eg crop or colour balance or even part of a larger work) also has to be released under a free license (this concept is called ShareAlike), use {{CC-BY-SA-2.5}}. 2.5 is the latest version of the Creative Commons licenses.

GNU - I presume you mean the GNU Free Documentation License, or GFDL, which Wikipedia uses for its text, has the onerous requirement that with any use of the image, a copy of the license must also be present. On the web this is OK but in print, maybe not. So I don't recommend the GFDL for images unless you dual-license with another one like a Creative Commons listed above.

Please be aware that any acceptable license here requires that you allow commercial work and allow people to creative derivative works (as I said above, you can require that they are ShareAlike, but that's up to you). HTH. pfctdayelise (说什么?) 17:00, 5 October 2006 (UTC)

But I asked the difference between PD and GNU and you answered all sorts of extra stuff and ignored my question. There is no place anywhere on Wikimedia Commons to get a straightforward answer to a question--it's impossible. Does any one here have any idea how frustrating this is, that any question asked includes voluminous unrelated details and seldom bothers to address the actual question? And most of it sounds like scolding. I've already been scolded by my first 10 hours on Wikimedia. Is there any time when I won't be scolded? I didn't ask about anything of the sort. Why should I be aware of something I don't care in the least bit about and learned 5 billion times already every single time I tried to find the answer to the question I was trying to get answered? In fact, I tried to give a dramatic enough (apparently not) disclaimer to discourage people from scolding me about this awareness again and again and again and again--I failed.

You answered all sorts of questions about attribution that I didn't ask, either. And because you answered all these questions I didn't ask, no one bothered to answer the question I did ask, so I'm right back where I started from, completely frustrated without any information whatsoever. And I have tons of digital pictures correctly identified to species level, some to subspecies, that I would love to upload because they would readily increase the usefulness of Wikipedia, which I think is generally a great idea. And on Wikimedia Commons of the dozen or so pictures I've looked at there has been botanically incorrect information on 3--and I've had to remove pictures from a couple of articles that were wrongly identified. So, I personally think it would be useful to try to make this project easier to use by people whose knowledge is not computers, but rather things like plants and amphibians and birds and grasslands. One way to do that would be to make it easy for people who aren't interested in the minutae to figure out how to use the system. I can spend another 10 hours reading information about various licenses, including the new ones I'm not the least bit interested in that you introduced me to, or I could spend 10 hours uploading botanically correct photographs for articles in Wikipedia. I personally think it would be useful to try to make this project easier to use by people whose knowledge is not computers, but rather things like plants and amphibians and birds and grasslands. I complete agree. But copyright is one of the hardest areas to make simple. If we simplify it to a certain level, we are being dishonest. I could say blah blah and not tell you that you must allow derivative works and commercial use, and that licenses are not irrevocable. Then you wouldn't have to think about what those things mean. But then I also wouldn't be sure that you understand these things, and if in 6 months you throw a pink fit because your image is being used on a commercial website and you're not getting paid, and you suddenly decide that you want to withdraw all of your free licenses, well...copyright holders need to understand these things.

Maybe the reason your question wasn't answered exactly is because you didn't ask something that exactly made sense. As I did say above -- GNU - I presume you mean the GNU Free Documentation License, or GFDL. GNU in reference to images or licenses is too non-specific (they have other licenses too), so if you mean GFDL then let's say GFDL.

PD = public domain = you give up all rights to anything related to the image.

GFDL = GNU Free Documentation License = you require that a copy of the license accompany any use of the image, AS WELL AS A BUNCH OF OTHER STUFF WHICH I'M GLOSSING OVER TO AVOID OUTRAGING YOU.

But everyone assumes different things, that the user is uploading images that aren't theirs, that the user is worried about commercial use, worry about irrevocability. It's unsafe for anyone to even ask any question, because they'll get told again and again things they never asked. And, see, after all my time reading, I still had no idea what the GFDL license was actually called! But no one bothered to point that out while debating whether or not I owned the image, which I didn't ask about, or was worried about commercial use, which I didn't ask about, or etc., etc. There's just too much information, it's like that one Wikipedia editor who simply thinks that more is always better, quality can burn in Hades. Trying to upload my company's current logo...

...to replace the obsolete, outdated logo that appears on the page that somebody created for my company ("Taco John's"). I have tried a couple of times to upload a jpg of the logo, but it shows up blank. What questions am I not answering correctly? The logo is a registered trademark of Taco John's, but I am the one who generally grants permission to our franchisees and others to display it. Please help me on this. Thank you.

Artwork published in Germany

Hi all. Can someone review User:Froehlich jochen's uploads? He's uploaded several works that were created early in the 20th century... some after 1923. Since the artist was German, I assume they were published in Germany. The user is claiming GFDL (I suppose since he took the photos himself), but I'm not familiar with German copyright law so I don't know what the copyright status of the original paintings would be. categoritzing a picture does not work

That has worked fine, but I forgot to add the categories. So, I want to do it now. When I click on 'categorize' on top of the page I get a new page with a window where I can enter key words. However, there I see no possibility to submit this. On the bottom of the page I get an error message (cf. below). Can you please tell me how I can add the categories to the picture ? Not Sure: Permission

The picture Image:Reverent samuel kobias.jpg from a church website (archives.umc.org) was uploaded and given the GNU Free Document License. On that website I didn't find any permission that this might be allowed. Would you please check the permission of the picture? (By the way: The name of the picture is misspelled. Hi Mathetes, thanks for bringing this to our attention. In future you can mark any images you find like this as {{subst:nld}} (nld = no license, marked by date... this includes missing license information as well).

Templates from en.wiki

I've uploaded a pic from en.wiki using Commons Helper. The permission on en.wiki was recorded on a specific template on the image page, with another template on the Talk page giving the ticket number for the Permission-Sought-and-Confirmed. Neither of these templates has worked on the Commons page.

1) I have uploaded pictures and added them in an article successfully, but now I cannot find them with a simple search in Wikimedia (the files are named Faros_Chania.JPG and the other one Chania_harbour.jpg

2) I have asked for permission for a couple of pictures from a website from the owner and he said that it's ok to use them in Wikipedia articles only. Which licensing option do I use when uploading?

For (1), the search index is not updated instantly. it might be some weeks until it is updated. So there is not much you can do but wait. In the meantime, please make sure all your images are in galleries/categories so that they are still able to be found.

In MediaWiki, one size fits all:

You don't have to upload smaller versions of files usually, because the MediaWiki software will automatically produce thumbnails. For example, to insert a thumbnail into an article, just type this: [[Image:Lesserj lg.jpg|thumb|right|This is a female Lesser Jardines Parrot, 6 years.]]

You can also insert a manual height for the image, if you want to control it. e.g. [[Image:Lesserj lg.jpg|thumb|right|100px|This is a female Lesser Jardines Parrot, 6 years.]] will make an image 100 pixels high.

In all cases, clicking on the image will take the user to the image page. From there, they can click on the image itself to access your original, hi-res version. Therefore, the smaller images you uploaded are not needed, and I will delete them.

The license is good. But please be aware that you are granting anyone rights to use it, not just Wikipedia.

Thanks - I must have done something wrong though - and I don't know what. The thumbnail image wasn't showing up on the page I made Psittacini so I took a look and noticed that the'_' was missing between 'lesserj' and '.jpg'. Overwrite existing file, and help with SVG

I have a new account, so I could not overwrite my file. Please will someone overwrite Image:Rowing_Blade_Template.svg with Image:Rowing_Blade_Template2.svg, and also delete Image:Rowing_Blade_Template1.svg ?

Where can I ask for help with svg? Some my gradients are just black in the thumbnails, but look fine in Firefox.

Two images not displaying

I uploaded Image:Wfm ocean terminal leith.jpg and Image:Wfm victoria quay.jpg today. For both, when their image pages are viewed the images just don't appear. They appear okay in thumbnails (e.g. in Category:Edinburgh) and clicking on the specific "download high resolution version" links works fine. Move Image

Can you move cot2.svg to cot.svg, I fixed a few things. Can you move Theorem of cosin3.svg to Theorem of cosin.svg because the current one fails to render. It is supposed to be Image:Theorem of cosin.svg, can you delete Image:Theorem of cosin2.svg(illustrator did not render it correctly), the original one is based on Image:Theorem of cosin.png, but does not render in Firefox or IE.

Better resolution image for sinosuidal map projection

Hi, I've just registered and unfortunately my account is too new so I can't update image files by myself. I wanted to update Image:Usgs map sinousidal equal area.PNG with the better resolution image Image:Sinousidal_projection.png. License changed on flickr

Hi, I uploaded three images a while ago, but the license seems to have changed on flickr to a license Commons can't use. Or I have made a mistake, but I can't imagine that actually since I discovered images from the same source on wikipedia by other uploaders. Which now also have a non free license. (unless we all made the same mistake). What do to now? Just delete them since we can't verify it anymore? Contact the copyright holder, politely explain that we'd love to use their images in our projects... And get them to license under CC-By-Sa (or better, dual CC-By-Sa and GFDL). Also be sure to invite them to contribute directly, ... we might gain a contributor. Hi, I just registered and uploaded Image:Sechseck-Zeichnung.svg, but then noticed some differences between Firefox's and Wikimedia's rendering. I fixed those errors and tried to replace the old version, but I'm not allowed to do this, because my account is too new. So I uploaded the new version to Image:Sechseck-Zeichnung2.svg and hope that someone can do the moving for me.

Experienced Wikipedian, New Commoners

I am an experienced Wikipedian that has finally gotten around to uploading my self-made images from the 'pedia to the commons. This will be a piece of cake for the most part, but for a few of my images of Huntington, West Virginia, someone has already uploaded them with an unhelpful rename and little in the way of attribution. I have re-uploaded one of them with the correct name (to preserve links to wikipedia) and the original descriptive text. What do I do to get the older duplicates deleted? If you're the author, then either uploading them yourself separately (as you did) or just correcting the attribution is fine. To request speedy deletion for the ones with bad names, put {{bad name|Image:Sameimagewithbettername.jpg}} on them. It would be nice if you first check if those ones are being used (by the CheckUsage tab), and if so, change the links to point to the better-named image. pfctdayelise (说什么?) 13:58, 17 October 2006 (UTC)

If you're from en.wiki (English-lang Wikipedia), the next step is to put a template on the en.wiki copy of the image. For an image with an identical name here, add {{NowCommonsThis}}, or just {{NCT}}. If you've had to change the image name (eg because someone else has already used that name here), just add {{NowCommons|new name of file}}. An admin at en.wiki will find the Now Commons tag, check and delete the en.wiki copy of the image.

If you're from another language wiki, I'm afraid I'm not sure what your procedure will be, but look for the same sort of thing. JackyR 21:51, 17 October 2006 (UTC)

Name conflict between Commons and Wikipedia

In trying to include an image uploaded by User:JoelRaskin to an article I am working on on Wikipedia. The image is named Image:Hillman.jpg. (This is about the housing cooperative in Cooperative Village in NYC). Wikipedia however already has an image with the same name (of Chris Hillman).

I could not find help on interwiki linking to images. Trying the obvious [[Image:commons:Hillman.jpg|...]] did not work. An alternative would be to rename the Commons image to "Hillman Housing.jpg". -- Petri Krohn 22:56, 17 October 2006 (UTC)

You need to reupload the image to a different filename and tag the other with {{newfile}}. There is no way to rename images at this time unfortunately and iw doesn't work with images.--Nilfanion 23:04, 17 October 2006 (UTC)

Copyright on old images?

I would like to upload this image from McGill University's website. The information page credits two people as the artists, both of whom died over 100 years ago. So it should be in the public domain, right? But when you click on the image to get the larger version, it has a "Copyright McGill University" tag stuck on the bottom. editing description

I have added several files in the commons and want now to change some things in the description (some mistakes which have to do with the permission). The problem is that by a simple search in the commons (using a keyword that all the file titles have) I cannot find all the files I need. How am I supposed to edit. The funny thing is that I have been able to use them on wikipedia, but no cannot alter them (this may cause misunderstundings with the authors of the files).

deleting

Am I able to delete a file that I have uploaded in the commons (actually I would like to replace one with a more correct one).

You can upload a new version of a file that will kind of overwrite the previous one. To do this just go to the image's page and click on a link for reuploading which you will find in File history section. The link is called Upload a new version of this file.

Using an Image

I am in the process of writing a book which I aim to publish privately,(5oo copies) I wish to include one of your images.Please can you inform me as to whether I need permission, and if there is any cost involved?

No need to have a specific permission, you'll just need to follow the rules given by the licence set on the image. For example if it has a CC-BY licence you simply need to state the author of the image. See also: Commons:Reusing content outside Wikimedia.

Asian tsunami, 2005

Hi

I want to upload this photo: http://www.surf.co.nz/Gallery/Photo/photo.asp?categoryKey=226&imageKey=1406 which shows the Asian tsunami just after breaking at Krabi Beach, Thailand.

It was sent to surf.co.nz by an anonymous contributor shortly after the event and was posted on the site. Surf.co.nz contacted the sender at my request, asking if I could distribute the photo for its scientific importance, but their email recieved no reply. Privacy laws here mean I can't contact them directly.

Can I upload it?

Unfortunately, the absence of "yes" is interpreted by the legal system as a "no". Unless the image's copyright status can be verified, we can't accept the image. Sorry :(. ~MDD4696 02:01, 24 October 2006 (UTC)
